Matthew Martinez was born in Los Alamos New Mexico and was raised in Chimayo. He graduated from Espanola Valley High School. In 1998 he graduated from the University of New Mexico with a Bachelors of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, and has since been working as a Systems Engineer for Honeywell, Defense Avionics Systems, in Albuquerque NM. He recently earned his MBA from the University of Phoenix in Business Technology Management.
Matthew has been involved with music since he was 3 years old. When he was 3, he made his first vocal performance in Albuquerque New Mexico with Mariachi Alma. Ever since then, Matthew has shown great interest in music. In elementary school Matthew played the trumpet and continued through High School. He performed with the Espanola Marching and concert band throughout New Mexico and in Florida
Matthew then began to play the Bass guitar and started a band in high school called "Los Jovenes". Members of the band included Matthew Martinez, John Montoya, Mike Valdez, Gilbert Sandoval, and Chris Valdez. After high school the band went its separate ways and Matthew formed a family band in 1990 with his father Henry Martinez Sr. and his brother Henry Martinez Jr. called Perfeccion. Perfeccion recorded their first professional album in 1991 entitled “La Mucura”. La Mucura was nominated as Cassette of the Year, Song of the Year, and Matthew was nominated for Male Vocalist of the Year by the NMHMA. Perfeccion went on to record 5 additional albums: "Gabino Barrera", "Hay Que Dolor", "Mi Corazon", "Puros Exitos", and "Con Animo". Perfeccion is currently working on their 6th CD to be released during the winter of 2005.
Matthew has been involved in several aspects of New Mexico Music, from performing with Perfeccion and Mariachi groups, to being a Disc Jockey at two New Mexico Spanish Radio stations, (KDCE Espanola, NM and KABQ, Albuquerque NM).
In 1999 Matthew co-produced New Mexico Rising Star Mari Griego’s first professional recording “Paquetito”. Since then he has been involved in several other musical productions of young New Mexico Artists such as Amber Felicia, Derek Alcon, Ernestine Romero, Krystal Renee and Anamaria. Matthew now has his own recording studio, Martinez Recording Studio and produced hot Latin group Guajira's CD,"Reflejos del Alma".
In 2000 Matthew produced his first solo production entitled, “Algo Nuevo”, (Something New) in which he received the award for Male Vocalist of the Year by the New Mexico Hispano Music Association. He also received nominations for Producer of the Year and Conjunto Song of the Year.
In 2002 Matthew completed his recording studio, "Martinez Recording Studio", where he produced Perfeccion's CDs entitled, “Perfeccion, Con Animo”, and “Ayer y Hoy”:. Perfeccion was nominated by the New Mexico Hispano Music Association for six awards. Matthew was nominated once again for Male Vocalist of the year, as well as Producer of the year. Matthew and his brother Henry Jr. received the award for Vocal Duo of the Year with "Mi Madrecita".
In August of 2003 Matthew released his second project with Revolucion, "Lagrimas de Alegria". He was nominated for seven awards by the New Mexico Hispano Music Association and once again received the award for Male Vocalist of the year with "Lagrimas de Alegria", as well as Conjunto Song of the Year with "Donde Andara".
In the spring of 2005 he released “La Diferencia”, which has been a top seller in New Mexico Music. Matthew received the 3 most prestigious awards at the 2005 New Mexico Hispano Music Awards Show. He won the award for Male Vocalist of the Year for the third time. He also took home the awards for Song of the Year and CD of the Year.
In 2007 Matthew was part of the Al Hurricane tribute show in which he performed and recorded “Carino Nuevo” and “La Que Se Fue” at a live concert. In 2007 Matthew recorded a duet “Dos Locos” with Jenna Martinez. They received vocal duo of the year at the NMHMA and the NMMEA awards shows. They were also selected as one of the 15 Grandes de Nuevo Mexico by the New Mexico Latin Music Academy.
Matthew’s latest recording “El Destino” was released in April of 2009. It currently tops the charts in music sales throughout New Mexico and Colorado.
